Let the Games Begin

Aiden has found his hearing aids! He is reaching up to his ear, grabbing them out, and using them as teethers. Expensive teethers. Mixed emotions about this all though. I am ...

Excited - Because he either realizes something is on his ears and wants to check them out, OR he's discovered his ears and realizes there is something he can grab off of them and of course where does it go? Right to the mouth!

Nervous - These aren't cheap devices and I don't think they're water proof! Aiden's been drooling like crazy ... just waiting for a tooth to pop up ... but these aren't my ideal teethers! Plus, I know from reading other stories, it'll become a game of "In the Ears, Out of the Ears", and I can only hope I will win ... I'm predicting not.

While watching all of this, Aiden's daddy was practicing the airplane noise with him (aaaaaahhh-aaaaah-aaahhh-aaaaah) and flying around the toy airplane, when Aiden looked right at him and out came "aaaaaahhh", out of nowhere! We both just laughed! Hey ... you never know what he heard, and we choose to believe he heard his daddy talking to him and he wanted to particiapte in the conversation too!

One more step ... one more day!

When Mari started tearing them out we had quite the routine. Get paper medical tape and literally tape right over the mold and tube and tape them to his ear. Then put a pilot cap on top of that as extra protection!

Oh boy! I went through that stage when I first got my hearing aids as an infant. My mother just a put a baby bonnet on my head to prevent me from taking my hearing aids out. I know that some parents who have baby boys will use some kind of pilot cap.

Aidan looks absolutely adorable in those pictures!

A milestone! He's learned the hearing-aid hokey pokey!

Pilot caps worked well at this age with Nolan, but it is so hot in the summer I can't bear to stick him in the hat again (we have no A/C). It can definitely become a game. People tell me that it gets better in toddlerhood- I certainly hope so!

Tammy,

I have read your blog several times and cried more than once. This is all such an emotional rollercoaster. I would definitely love to chat sometime and am new to blogging. I always joked that I didn't want to start one becuase I didn't have anything to write about...I guess I should have been careful what I wished for! However, this is the best support and therapy I could get! Thank you!

Yes, I believe we're in for quite the ride, especially as he gets older! I'll have to take stock in medical tape and pilot caps! haha

Leah - I love how you put it "the hearing aid hokey-pokey!" : )

Karen - It is definitely an emotional roller coaster, but gets a little better each day! The tears of sadness become tears of happiness as they reach different hearing milestones. I can't wait for the day that Aiden looks at me and tells me he loves me! The blogging world has helped me tremendously ... these moms & dads out here are absolutely wonderful! I call it my therapy! : ) Feel free to email me at mjk_tjk@yahoo.com if you'd like to chat sometime!

Hi there! I found your blog link off of Tayten's blog and have been sneaking in every once in a while. Aiden is just adorable. I have a three year old with profound hearing loss and one cochlear implant. You are doing a great job with your little one, good luck with your "journey", it does get easier!

I remember those days well!! It is so great that she will now leave the CI in because she is getting so much from it. Those days will come for you as well.
That is so great that Aiden responded to his Daddy, that just makes all the hard work worth it.

Hello! I received your message and thanks! Feel free to post Tayten's link. Do you mind if I do the same? You have some adorable kiddos and they'll be great language models for your newest addition!

Ha Ha Ha! Welcome to the club!

Pilot Caps from Hanna Andersson (www.hannaandersson.com) work great!! We have them in every color and in just about every size. Drew wore them 100% of the time, even when it was 90+ degrees outside.

Love the airplane story!

Awww! You've got your hands full! My mother told me that I once flushed my hearing aid down the toilet while we were visiting friends out of town. And it was a body aid! Keep an eye on those hearing aids!

Aiden is such a cutie! I can't wait for mine to arrive. . . and they've been delayed five hours because of weather in Houston!
